Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most commonly appear on the legs. They develop when internal vein valves weaken or fail, allowing blood to flow backward and pool (venous reflux). This increased pressure can cause the veins to swell, bulge, and twist, leading to discomfort and potential circulation complications if left untreated.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

  • Genetics: A family history of vein disease significantly increases your risk.
  • Age: Vein valves naturally experience wear and tear over time.
  • Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Extended inactivity restricts blood flow from the lower legs.
  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, menopause, and hormonal therapies can relax vein walls.
  • Weight Gain: Excess body weight puts extra pressure on lower-extremity veins.
  • Prior Leg Trauma: Injuries to the legs can damage underlying venous structures.

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

  • Bulging, rope-like blue or purple veins on the legs or ankles
  • Achy, heavy, or tired feeling in the legs, especially at the end of the day
  • Swelling in the lower legs, ankles, and feet
  • Throbbing, burning, or muscle cramping in the lower extremities
  • Itching or skin irritation around affected veins

How Can Varicose Veins Be Prevented?

  • Engage in low-impact physical activity, such as walking or swimming, to promote healthy circulation.
  • Elevate your legs above heart level when resting.
  • Avoid standing or sitting in one position for prolonged periods.
  • Wear graduated compression stockings during daily activities or long travel.
  • Maintain a healthy weight to minimize pressure on your vascular system.

What Are the Treatments for Varicose Veins?

  • Endovenous Laser/Radiofrequency Ablation: A minimally invasive procedure using targeted thermal energy to close damaged veins.
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy: Surgical removal of surface-level varicose veins through micro-incisions.
  • Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy: Injection of a specialized solution into deeper affected veins to seal them shut.
  • Compression Therapy: Custom-fitted compression garments to support healthy venous pressure.
